Welcome to the Cultural Studies course wiki page
Dear Students,
I'm glad to provide you with some resources and instructional materials as a course support. Through this webpage, students will be able to download some of the course handouts.
  • Course Description:

This is a three-credit-hour course which aims to furnish students with extensive readings of the English language and culture. It introduces students to the English culture in terms of its totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought. The students are trained to observe and recognize the relationships between cultural components/particles (culturemes) and the English language culture so that they can reach a deep understanding of English whether as a source language (SL) or as a target one (TL). Emphasis is to be put on globalism, intercultural dialogue and comparative literature and on how native cultures interact with foreign ones. Deeply-rooted cultural idiomatic expressions and proverbs are to be investigated as practical examples.
Course Policies:
A. Basic Course-Related Requirements:
· Attendance is compulsory. In the event of missing the class, students must inform the instructor as soon as possible; failure to do so will have consequences for their grades. Students with more than 25% of absences without justification will receive an automatic F for the course.
· Students must be punctual to respect other students' time, let alone their own. Being late for class more than twice will be counted as an absence.
· Assignments must be submitted on time. No late submissions will be accepted.
· No make-up exam will be administered unless it is an absolute emergency.
· This class has no tolerance for cheating or plagiarism. Students will bear full responsibility for the consequences of their own actions.
B. Civility in the Classroom:
· Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environment that is conducive to learning.
· Appropriate student behavior creates a better environment for learning and teaching.
· No behavior that will cause distraction or discomfort will be allowed such as talking to someone in class unless it is allowed by the instructor.
· Students are encouraged to participate actively in class but no one should dominate class discussion. Regards, Dr. M. Ammar
